glossary
Informal Romanization (IR) This refers to the non-standard romanization usually found in the “Chanting Books” used by Furnace Mountain, the Kwan Um School of Zen, and other groups that practice in Zen Master Seung Sahn's lineage. The two main difference between this “informal” romanization (IR) and the more standardized “Revised Romanization” (RR) are (1) IR transliterates both ㅓ (eo) and ㅗ (o) as “o”, and (2) IR transliterates both ㅡ (eu) and ㅜ as “u”. For example, IR gives us “bop” for 法, meaning “dharma”, which in Hangul is spelled 법 (with ㅓ), whereas RR renders this as “beop”. Similarly, IR gives us “gum” for 金, meaning “gold” or “metal”, which in Hangul is spelled 금 (with ㅡ), whereas RR renders this as “geum”.
